Pennsylvania

In 1681, King Charles II of England granted William Penn a section of land west of the Delaware River. Penn called this forested land Sylvania (Latin for “woods”). As a tribute to William Penn’s father, King Charles himself tacked on the prefix, making it Pennsylvania. One of the original Thirteen Colonies, Pennsylvania is known as the Keystone State because of its important role in forming the country. The Declaration of Independence was signed and the United States Constitution adopted in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania has contributed much to how Americans eat. Hershey and Heinz are headquartered in Pennsylvania and familiar throughout the country and much of the world. Pennsylvania is a major manufacturer of potato chips, pretzels, and other snacks. In Philadelphia, Italian immigrants created the Philly cheese steak and pepper pot, while Pennsylvania Dutch developed warm comfort foods like chicken pot pie and regional wonders like sticky buns, scrapple, shoofly pie, and the soft pretzel. The first commercial mushrooms were grown near Philadelphia in the late 19th century. Pennsylvania remains a major mushroom producer.

About me:
I'm am a wife and a mother who has been blessed far beyond measure. Since the birth of my daughter it has become my lifes ambition to be healthy in mind, body and spirit and cooking healthful natural meals for my family is one of the main ways I maintain that balance. Another aspect of that is that I am an avid runner so I have to feed my body healthfully in order to promote maximum efficancy in energy as well as rapid mucsle repair. All these efforts however have shown me that my most important task in life is to be a role model for my daughter so that she too can have a blessed happy healthy family.

Slow Cooker Chicken and Dumplings

Reviewed on Nov. 20, 2008 by IRISHDAUD
Very good but I made so many changes, that it really wasn't the same recipe. I added 3 cans of COC, and covered the chicken with chicken broth (then added water as needed). I also added garlic powder, salt, pepper & celery flakes. I then used drop biscuits with Bisquick and dropped 7 biscuits in the mixture about 30 minutes prior. As well as 1/3 C of frozen peas. It was really good!

Super Sausage Gravy

Reviewed on Nov. 20, 2008 by happyschmoopies
This was pretty much the recipe I have been making for years - but it's nice to have exact measurements instead of eyeballing it like I usually do! I use hot sausage because we like it a little spicy and add some cracked black pepper. Depending on the sausage you use - you may need to add a pinch of salt. Great recipe!

J.P.'s Big Daddy Biscuits

Reviewed on Nov. 20, 2008 by happyschmoopies
I made the recipe as written except I subbed buttermilk for the regular milk because that is how my Mom always made her biscuits. My problem with biscuits has always been the ratio of how much of everything I need to put in! I thought the recipe had a good flavor and they did rise nicely so I gave the recipe a 4 star rating. The actual biscuit was probably a 3 star, but, that is entirely my fault because I think I overworked the dough and they were a little tough. I'll just have to keep practicing!!
